Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport prepares for Gaemi
BANGKOK, Oct 7 (TNA) - Both Suvarnabhumi International Airport and the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. said on Sunday that they are fully prepared to counter the impact of tropical storm Gaemi which is expected to weaken into a depression and bring heavy rain to Thailand on Sunday night.
Wing Commander Sook Puengtham, deputy director of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, said he is confident that the airport would not be impacted from flooding because it is equipped with a 23.5-kilometre-long dyke while its 3.50-metre earthen dyke around the airport is above normal level.
The earthen dyke could help protect the airport from being inundated during late last year severe flood, he said.
Also, the airport has two large water pump stations while each station has three gigantic water pumps which could discharge water at the rate of one million cubic metres a day, Wing Commander Sook said. Therefore, the airport has no problem about heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. said it has backup plans to cope with tropical storm Gaemi at every airport in the kingdom.
Commercial airlines will be asked to divert their flights and land at other airports which are safe for landing in case of poor weather conditions, said the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd..
The agency said it monitors the weather conditions every half an hour. (TNA)
