Ahmadinejad proposes Syrian ceasefire on Eid al-Adha

TEHRAN,Oct.18(MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that ceasefire on Eid al-Adha was one of the proposals put forward by the Islamic Republic to resolve the Syrian crisis. Ahmadinejad made the remarks during a meeting with directors of the Kuwaiti media outlets in Kuwait City late on Wednesday. Eid al-Adha is an Islamic holiday which starts on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah (October 26) and lasts several days. “The Islamic Republic of Iran has proposed that ceasefire be declared on Eid al-Adha and none of the sides should break the ceasefire.” Ahmadinejad added, “No government should also give support to each side so that the two sides resolve their problems through dialogue.” He advised all countries to help resolve the Syrian issue through dialogue. Commenting on his meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Baku on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said that during the meeting, he discussed Iran’s proposals on Syria with Erdogan. Previously, Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League joint special envoy on Syria, had asked Iranian authorities for help in achieving a ceasefire in Syria during the Eid al-Adha later this month, according to his spokesman. “Brahimi has appealed to the Iranian authorities to assist in achieving a ceasefire in Syria during the forthcoming Eid Al-Adha, one of the holiest holidays celebrated by the Muslims around the world,” his spokesman said on Monday, according to Reuters. Brahimi made the request in talks with Iranian officials during a visit to Tehran. During the talks Brahimi also underlined that the crisis in Syria “was getting worse every day and stressed the urgent need to stop the bloodshed,” the spokesman said. A ceasefire would “help create an environment that would allow a political process to develop,” he quoted Brahimi as saying.
