S. Korea, U.S. to cooperate in clean energy R&D By Lee Joon-seung

SEOUL, Oct. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and the United States plan to work closely in the development of next generation clean energy resources that will permit sustainable eco-friendly growth, the government said Thursday.

Cooperation in research and development (R&D) could help reduce greenhouse gas
emissions and lead to improved "energy mix" that will allow both countries to
reduce their dependence on fossils fuel the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.
It said joint work could take place in such areas as so called clean coal carbon
dioxide capture and storage (CCS) development, gas hydrates and enhanced
geothermal systems (EGS).
"Details on the extent of cooperation will be touched at the U.S.-Korea Energy
Consultation meeting that will be held throughout the day, but the projects can
benefit global efforts to cut back on greenhouse gases and meet national energy
requirements," a official said. He said Korea Institute of Energy Research and
the National Energy technology Laboratory will be tasked with coming up with
feasible projects.
Clean coal-CCS is being studied around the world to make better use of the
resource that have been cited for causing global warming. Gas hydrates are
semisolid mixture of methane gas and water molecules that are created by water
pressure and cold temperatures found in deep ocean bottoms.
Seoul has carried out initial surveys and found 600 million tons of the material
in the East Sea, which is enough to meet the country's gas demands for up to 30
years.
The U.S. is a front-runner in this field and has started the Alaska North Slope
project that is designed to make full use of the resource. The two sides signed a
statement of intent in April to permit South Korea to gain valuable experience by
observing the work first hand.
EGS refers to a system that drills holes 3-10 kilometers deep into the earth to
reach hot bedrocks and then pour water into this man-made pipe to create steam.
The steam released can be turn power plants and generate electricity.
The ministry, meanwhile, said the bilateral energy cooperation meeting that was
resumed in 2006 after being halted in 1997 can help discover ways to satisfy the
energy and environmental protection needs of the two countries.
