Israel flouting intl. law through threatening Iran: Algerian envoy

TEHRAN,Nov.6(MNA) – The Algerian ambassador to Tehran said that military threats issued against Iran by Israel are a flagrant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. Ambassador Sofiane Mimouni said that under the UN Charter, issuing threats and using force against a UN member state by another member state is forbidden. The Clause 4 of the Article 1 of the Chapter I of the UN Charter states that all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations. Elsewhere in his remarks, the ambassador said Algeria supports the legal right of all countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, adding that he believes that Iran’s nuclear activities do not run counter to the principles of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other international conventions. He went on to say that Iran’s nuclear issue could be resolved only through a diplomatic and peaceful approach. Mimouni also expressed hope that the next round of negotiations between Tehran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany) over the country’s nuclear program, which is likely to be held after the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday, would produce positive results. Commenting on the relations between Iran and Algeria, he said that bilateral ties have improved in all areas, but considering the strong political relationship between the two countries, trade interaction has not reached the desired level.
