Germany Provides Sustainable Education For Afghan Refugee Children In Iran: UNHCR

Tehran, Nov 21, IRNA – In addition to an earlier 2 million Euro donation in the area of health this year, a further 1,000,000 Euro contribution by the German government will provide several thousand vulnerable Afghan refugee children living in Iran with the opportunity to access education. The Islamic Republic hosts the second largest refugee population in the world with some 890,000 registered Afghan and Iraqi refugees, a news release issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Tuesday. The donation will be spent on construction of educational facilities, the purchasing of school material and stationery as well as the purchase and distribution of hygiene kits for the school children in addition to training sessions by health workers, and also the improvement of hygiene facilities in schools hosting refugees. Bernard Doyle, UNHCR Iran Representative said, “The current economic conditions have impacted the overall well-being of refugees leading them to sacrifice education and healthcare in order to provide for the more basic needs of food and shelter. Continuous commitment to humanitarian assistance by the International Community is vital for the protection of refugees worldwide.“ The German government's second contribution increases access to education for refugee children, easing the economic burden of school expenditures and therefore allowing several thousand Afghan refugee children to attend school./end
