Toyota group posts 1st quarterly sales fall in 7 yrs

NAGOYA, Oct. 27 Kyodo - Toyota Motor Corp. said Monday its worldwide group sales in the July-September
quarter fell 4 percent from a year earlier to 2,236,000 units, the first
quarterly sales fall in seven years amid a slowing global economy and high
gasoline prices.
In the January-September period, global sales of the Toyota group, including
Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., totaled 7,051,000 units, a marginal
rise from 7.05 million units for the corresponding period the year before.
Its sales for the whole of 2008 may sink below the 9.37 million units it posted
in 2007.
Toyota officials traced the sales fall in the July-September quarter to a rapid
deceleration in the global economy buffeted by the U.S. credit turmoil and to
the gas price run-up that has undercut consumer appetite for automobiles.
They also cited a slowdown in emerging economies like China, which had until
recently acted like an engine for global economic growth, as a factor behind
the quarterly sales fall.
The Toyota group last posted a year-on-year quarterly sales fall in the
July-September period of 2001.
On a parent-only basis, Toyota's 2008 global sales may be limited to some 8.3
million units, below the year-before level for the first time in a decade.
Still, Toyota is likely to overtake General Motors Corp. as the world's largest
automaker in terms of 2008 sales, because the magnitude of GM's year-on-year
sales fall is expected to eclipse Toyota's, industry analysts said.
With regards to performances in the April-Sept. first half of fiscal 2008,
Toyota said its domestic group sales fell 0.8 percent from the previous year to
1,027,908 units, with its exports gaining 1.6 percent to 1,407,440 units.
Nissan Motor Co. said its domestic sales in the same six-month period slipped
4.3 percent to 317,808 units, while its exports shot up 45.4 percent to 400,457
units.
Honda Motor Co. said its domestic sales in the fiscal half eked out a 0.1
percent gain to 292,180 units, while its exports dropped 7.9 percent to 320,694
units.
A year-on-year fall in the period's domestic sales at Mazda Motor Corp., a key
affiliate of struggling Ford Motor Co., was limited to 0.1 percent at 122,940
units with its exports soaring 27.2 percent to 472,316 units.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said its domestic sales in the period shrank 17.3
percent to 83,298 units, while its exports increased 6.0 percent to 299,050
units.
