UNHCR looks into problems of Rohingya migrants in Thai South

SONGKHLA, THAILAND, January 22 (TNA) - Staffs of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) visited Songkhla province in the Thai South on Tuesday to inspect problems related to Rohingya migrants from neighbouring Myanmar. Officials of the UNHCR and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited the illegal Rohingya immigrants at the Songkhla Home for Children and Family Aid to look into their living conditions and assistance provided by the Thai government. The officials also listened to problems raised by the Rohingya Muslims, particularly from those who have requested to be sent to third countries, instead of being repatriated to their home country, before the UNHCR will coordinate solutions with concerned parties. Meanwhile, Thai police at the Bang Klam station in Songkhla accepted two more Rohingya ethnics for custody, after local villagers found them in a forest on the Kaew mountain range in the Tha Chang locality, close to Hat Yai. The Rohingya migrants said they had been lost in the forest for about five days and eaten wild fruits for their survival, and that several more Rohingya people had remained lost in the forest. (TNA)
