Laos to produce “I want to be a soldier” film

(KPL) The Cinematography Department has announced its decision to produce a film, “I want to be a soldier” on 27 October in Vientiane Capital in commemoration of the coming 60th founding anniversary of the Lao People’s Army due next year.
The actual shooting of this 80- to 90-minute long film will be launched in November and December of 2008.This was disclosed by Mr Bounchao Phichit, Director of the Cinematography Department, in a press conference held in the department on Monday. At the same time he introduced the actors and actresses of the film to the press corps. Mr Bounchao said, “The production of this film is to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Army and at the same time we will also be producing a documentary film of the life of late President Souphanouvong.” This film, he added, is to recognise his revolutionary activities and to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.”
Speaking to the journalists he said that four more documentaries will be produced in the near future: the National Games of Champassak, the 25th SEA Games, the 450th proclaiming anniversary of Vientiane as the country’s capital and the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Lao PDR.
“The budget for the film “I want to be a soldier” is set at 300 million kip and the Lao government will contribute one third of the amount and private companies will foot the rest of the bill. This was said by Vithoune Sundara, Deputy-Director of the Cinematography Department. He also said that the Lao government has already approved of a sum of 50 million kip for the production of the documentary film on late President Souphanouvong.
Speaking on the movie production by the Ministry of Information and Culture over the next few years, the deputy head said that it is in talks with Russia and France to produce films on a cooperative basis and that they are now discussing shooting work in trilateral sites.
