MALAYSIA RECOGNISES INDEPENDENCE OF KOSOVO
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has decided to recognise the Republic of Kosovo as an independent and sovereign country, said Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
Rais said with the decision, Malaysia would establish diplomatic ties with
Kosovo at a suitable time.
"Malaysia's recognition of the independence of Kosovo will help meet the
aspirations of the Kosovo people in wanting an independent country," he said in
a statement here Friday.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on Feb 17 2008, a move opposed
strongly and declared illegal by Serbia.
Thirty-eight countries including the United States, Britain, France, and
many European countries have recognised the independence of Kosovo, a country of
2.1 million people.
Russia, historically a close of ally of Serbia, opposes Kosovo's
independence, a move that completed the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia.
