Iran imposes travel ban on Saudi diplomat

TEHRAN,April 8(MNA) – The Saudi diplomat involved in an accident in which an Iranian citizen was killed has been banned from leaving Iran, Iranian MP Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, Boroujerdi said that according to the police investigation, the Saudi diplomat had been drunk driving when his vehicle crashed into the car of the Iranian citizen in Tehran on March 14.
The Saudi diplomat was identified as Yasser bin Mohammad Ali Yami.
“Although those who serve as diplomats in the country enjoy immunity, they must observe the country’s laws,” said Boroujerdi, who is the chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on March 19 that it had protested to the Saudi Embassy about the incident and would pursue the case through diplomatic and legal channels.
The consumption of alcohol is forbidden in Iran under the sharia (Islamic law).
