Roar wins on the road again
Queensland continued their amazing A-League road rampage, putting another dent in
Newcastle's stuttering title defence with a 2-1 win at the Jets' EnergyAustralia
Stadium.
The Roar made it 14 points from six away games as they recovered the win after
conceding a 23rd minute goal to their nemesis Joel Griffiths.
Queensland hit back before half time with goals to Matt McKay and Charlie Miller and
held on in the second half to record their fourth win in an unbeaten away campaign.
Newcastle piled on the pressure after the break when they created almost all of the
chances but couldn't manufacture an equaliser.
Lively Griffiths forced Queensland's goal keeper Liam Reddy to making three saves
and Kaz Patafta fired into the side netting, but the roar held firm.
The result lifted Queensland into the top four above Central Coast and five points
above the Jets.
While it was Newcastle's first home defeat of the season they have collected only
one win and six points from five games on their own turf and are now five points
behind Queensland.
The result maintained the fixture's unusual record of never having produced a home
winner.
While Newcastle created more chances early on, Queensland always looked dangerous on
the counter, especially through Massimo Murdocca and Miller, who hit the post in the
17th minute.
Griffiths went close with one attempt, before he succeeded in notching his seventh
goal in nine games against Queensland.
Pouncing on a sweeping crossfield pass from fellow striker Edmundo Zura, Griffiths
cut inside and curled a right foot shot inside the post.
Newcastle's lead lasted only two minutes as McKay nonchalantly swept the ball home
from close range after Sergio van Dijk and Murdocca carved open the Newcastle
defence with some precise passing.
Murdocca was also the main provider of Miller's 35th minute winner, though some of
the home crowd clearly felt it should have been rubbed out for offside.
