Laos not to permit the export of coal

(KPL) Laos will not permit any sector to explore the coal for export, when domestic market has high demand in particularly industrial sectors, said Vientiane officials.

Some cement plants in Laos have faced with the shortage of coal for cement production because almost of the coal is available for using in plants has been imported from Thailand and Vietnam, but unfortunately the import of coal from neighboring countries saw higher price.
The Lao government has ordered state and private sectors involving in exploration of coal to ease export coals to overseas, most of them receiving only permission for exploration to supply to domestic market, according to Department of Mines, the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
Mr Thongphath Inthavong, Director General of Department of Mines told KPL news last Friday that the government has recently issued a notice on ending the exploration of coal for export. But the Government will give green light for private sectors to explore the coal for domestic market due to volume of the coal is limited.
Therefore the government has necessarily to preserve the coal for market consumption that the coal mines will be over in the future.
He believed that Laos would have to use a lot of the coals in nearly future when industrial sectors in Laos blooming especially cement production, steel factories and electricity.
He said that now many cement plants have faced with higher price of import, now the cement plants in Khammuan and Savannakhet provinces import the coal from Vietnam.
