UAE'S ETIHAD TO SAVE US$20 MLN ON FUEL THIS YEAR

DUBAI, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Etihad Airways' fuel saving measures will save the company 73 million dirham (US$20 million) this year.

The national airline of the United Arab Emirates said it had saved more
than 44 million dirham (US$12 million) so far this year and remained on track
to achieve the 73 million dirham target.

"With the high price of aviation fuel and against a deteriorating global
economic backdrop, it is increasingly important that Etihad does all it can to
control its cost base," said its executive vice-president for operations,
Captain Richard Hill.

In a statement, he said fuel was now Etihad's largest single cost and
accounted for between 35 and 40 percent of the airline's annual expenditure.

According to the statement, fuel savings had been achieved through a
variety of measures, such as reducing weight on board the aircraft, changing
certain operating procedures, reducing cruise speed where appropriate and
increasing the frequency of engine washes.

In addition, the Abu Dhabi-based carrier said it had more than 80 percent
of its fuel needs for 2008 hedged and 40 percent for 2009.

The airline currently has a fleet of 39 aircraft which will increase to 42
by the end of the year.
