AUSSIE TEAM TRAIN ROUND-THE-CLOCK IN A BID TO WIN WEC
SETIU (Malaysia), Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Australian equestrian team
that has been training round-the-clock since arriving here last month, are
oozing with
confidence of bagging the title at the 2008 FEI-World Endurance Championship
(WEC) held in Terengganu.
The Aussie team who started training at the Terengganu International
Endurance Park (TIEP) in Lembah Bidong, venue of the WEC, over the last two
weeks, believe their hard work in training would bear fruits.
Margaret Wade, 47, a member of the six-member Aussie team said her horse,
China Doll which is an Arab-Australian crossbreed, would be instrumental in
team's efforts to emerge champion.
"With the excellent performance from China Doll and backed by my two
decades of experience, we are confident of winning," she said when met at TIEP
here Monday.
Wade, participating in Malaysia for the first time said, she had been
training round-the-clock to get used to the local weather before the big
day.
"The local weather is more humid and dry compared with Australia. Therefore
I had to put in extra hours of training to adapt to the local terrains.
"Training is divided in two sessions to ensure there is not much
pressure on the horse. This method is applied in a bid to enhance the
performance on race day," she said.
Though confident, Wade anticipates stiff challenge from the United Arab
Emirates and Bahrain teams, as these two teams are accustomed to the local
weather conditions.
Her team-mate, George Matthew Sample, 40, said his horse, Brookleigh
Ricardo which is an Arab breed has not been defeated in any of the endurance
races over the last two years.
"I guess Ricardo would be able to perform excellently in this race too. We
have been training hard for the last few days," he added.
The Federation Equestre International (FEI)-WEC hosted by Malaysia would
witness about 120 world class endurance riders from 33 countries, including from
Malaysia - led by Malaysian King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin - converge in
Malaysia's east coast state of Terengganu for the event to be held from Nov 6-9.
