MPI ADDS NEW CATEGORY TO MALAYSIAN JOURNALISM AWARDS

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) has added a new category to the Malaysian Journalism Awards to encourage young journalists to achieve greater heights in line with Malaysia's goal of developing better human capital by 2020.

MPI president Azman Ujang said the new category, the "A Samad Ismail
Young Journalist Award", was targeted at journalists below 30 years old from any
Malaysian media organisation.

"The late A Samad Ismail was a mover and shaker in Malaysian journalism
before he was even 30. At 21 he was already an editor for Berita Malai, at 22 an
assistant editor for Utusan Melayu and by 29 he was the deputy editor of Utusan
Melayu (Malay daily).

"This award, targeted at young journalists, is to encourage them to achieve
greater heights in their craft at a young age. We will look for the best article
that contributes a lot to journalism and has great impact," Azman told a news
conference here Tuesday.

He said the prize money for the A Samad Ismail Award would be around
RM10,000.

Besides the new category, drastic changes have also been made to the
Malaysian Journalism Awards this year by reducing the number of categories from
33 to only 11 and limiting contestants to two articles per category.

MPI chief executive officer Chamil Wariya said they planned to make the
awards more generic in nature instead of being too specific as was done
previously.

This year, the prestigious Kajai Award is open to articles in all languages
instead of only in Bahasa Malaysia while the "Tokoh Wartawan Negara" (National
Prominent Journalist) Award will be held on a separate occasion.

"We do not want to outshine the "Tokoh Wartawan Negara" (National Prominent
Journalist) Award because it was normally given at the end of the ceremony and
many of our guests were already tired.

"As for the Kajai Award, we're opening it to articles in all languages
because we want to ensure that the award's recipient will be the best. MPI
would also like to implore editors to find the best articles to submit," said
Chamil.
The awards presentation will be held on April 7 next year and all media
organisations, including print, online and electronic, in the country are
welcome to submit their entries and nominations.
