RULER PROPOSES REBRANDING OF STATE AS "MALAYSIA'S FOOD PROVIDER"

SINTOK (Malaysia), Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The Ruler of northern state Kedah, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, Wednesday proposed a rebranding of Kedah state to elevate it from the status of Malaysia's rice bowl to the country's food provider.

"I visualise Kedah as the primary producer of various types of food to meet
the needs of the people in the country as well as abroad," he said in his
acceptance speech when receiving the honorary Doctor of Philosophy in
Development of Management at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), one of Malaysia's
public university here.

The university's pro-chancellor, Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh, presented the
award to the sultan. It is in recognition of the sultan's contributions to
the development of the university since his installation as its chancellor 20
years ago.

The ruler said he was proud of the status of rice bowl accorded to Kedah
but hoped that it could be elevated through a rebranding.

Besides the production of rice, which meets 40 per cent of the country's
needs, Kedah also cultivates rubber, oil palm, sugarcane, tobacco, fruits,
coconut and vegetables, produces chicken, beef, mutton and milk and lands fish.

Statistics show that in 2006 the state also cultivated vegetables on 542
hectares and yielded 6,781 tonnes of the produce valued at RM8.2 million (US$2.3
million).

In the same year, Kedah also produced 47,000 tonnes of chicken, 3,800
tonnes of beef and 1.16 million litres of milk and landed 67,121 tonnes of fish.

Tuanku Abdul Halim said UUM could take the lead in helping the state
realise
the objective of being the country's food provider.

As such, the university should be given the trust to help develop the
state's agriculture sector, including in the Northern Corridor Economic Region
(NCER), a massive infrastructure development project, which also covers Kedah.

The sultan said the UUM human capital was highly qualified in terms of
management expertise to help Kedah meet the objective.

Meanwhile, the sultan also asked the university staff to come up with
advanced ideas to support policy-makers in drawing up development programmes for
the future.

He said emphasis should be given to the people's well-being in various
aspects in the achievement of economic progress, including in terms of economic
well-being, health, social harmony, political stability as well as emotional and
spiritual balance.
