Lao organic coffee conforms to EU standards

(KPL) The Lao Coffee Association said Laos is now producing the organic coffee that conforms to the standards set by European Union and so it would be exporting them to USA, Japan and Europe next year.
President of Lao Coffee Association, Mr. Sinouk Sisombath, said this week his association spent two years to set up the right conditions to nurture and export organic coffee to overseas markets and that in 2009 Lao would be exporting 20 tons of this type of coffee.
“However the association will expand the acreage for organic coffee in order to increase the volume for export,” said the President of this association.
“The French and German governments have assisted us in organic agriculture and in marketing ,”added Mr Sinouk.
The coffee planters in Paksong, Champassak, said that the fertile land for growing organic coffee has been decreasing and it came at a time when the demand for organic coffee in other countries is trending upwards.
They also said that while it is more difficult to plant coffee in chemical-free ways compared to planting the normal strains of coffee plants but the high price of organic coffee makes such efforts worthwhile and rewarding,” said Mr. Sinouk when he spoke to journalists.
It is estimated that this year’s production of coffee would only be up to 20,000 tones, valued at US$30 million and this level of production is 30 per cent less than any normal year –as the heavy rains of this year’s wet season took a toll on the growth of coffee beans by the plants, said the president of the Lao Coffee Association.
