TRADITIONAL MALAY ATTIRE ATTRACTS ATTENTION IN MEDINA

MEDINA, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- When most Malaysian Haj pilgrims in the Holy Land are clad in nearly-identical white robes, Bunasir Ismon, from Batu Pahat, southern Johor-state in Peninsular Malaysia, chooses to wear the baju Melayu complete with sampin and songkok, his usual "mosque attire".

Little did he know that he would attract so much attention when he
turned
up at the Nabawi Mosque for Zohor prayer Thursday, wearing the Malay male's
traditional attire.

"Since young, I am so used to wearing the baju Melayu, especially when
going to the mosque for prayers.

"I think we have to keep our Malaysian identity when we are abroad," he
told Bernama when met outside the mosque.

Male Haj pilgrims from India and Pakistan can easily be identified by their
salwar kameez (loose pyjama-like trousers with long shirt or tunic), the
Indonesians by their special uniforms or sarongs with long shirts, and the
Turkish pilgrims by their traditional headgear.
