Thai government urged to support people-proposed amnesty bill

BANGKOK, July 16 (TNA) - Relatives of political violence victims have asked the Thai government to support an amnesty bill proposed by them. Phayao Akhad who represents relatives of the people killed in political demonstrations in 2010 submitted a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana today to seek the government support for the amnesty bill drafted by the relatives. Receiving the letter addressed to Thai Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Pongthep told reporters that many amnesty bills were proposed to the Thai Parliament and the content of the bill from the relatives is similar to that of other bills, with only their difference in a proposed amnesty for soldiers and government officials who did not take any violent action, which is considered a sensible issue. Pongthep acknowledged, however, that the government whip committee and the Thai House of Representatives will decide which bill will be considered first in the Lower House. According to the deputy premier, the Thai House will, nonetheless, consider all bills in its next session. Meanwhile, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Varathep Rattanakorn said that the government whip committee will discuss the issue on July 24, 2013. (TNA)
