Gov't debt falls to 843.28 tril. yen with curb in new bond issue

TOKYO, Nov. 10 Kyodo - The outstanding balance of central government debt stood at 843.28 trillion yen as of Sept. 30, down 5.96 trillion yen from an all-time high of 849.24 trillion yen at the end of fiscal 2007 in late March, the Finance Ministry said Monday.

Per capita debt came to about 6.60 million yen as of the end of September, down
some 50,000 yen from March 31. The debt balance shrank as the government has
curbed the issuance of new government bonds, but it is expected to worsen again
as the state will likely increase bond issues to finance stimulus measures and
cover shortfalls in tax revenues.
The balance broke down to 680.26 trillion yen for government bonds, down 4.07
trillion yen from March, 56.03 trillion yen for borrowing, down 1.13 trillion
yen, and 106.99 trillion yen for financing bills, down 0.76 trillion yen.
General government bonds accounted for 541.65 trillion yen of outstanding
government bonds, up 186.7 billion yen from March.
