Health journalism to be added to Arab Journalism Award categories

Abu Dhabi, Nov 11, 2008 (WAM) - The General Secretariat of the Arab Journalism Award has announced the addition of health journalism to the existing 12 categories and the special prize for the Media Personality of the Year.

The new award carries a cash prize of US$15000, taking the total value of the Arab Journalism Award to US$250,000.

The new award aims at promoting the growth of health journalism in the Arab world, particularly in view of the dire need for creating awareness on health issues and the relatively weak state of health journalism in the region. The Health Journalism award will go to the best investigative or analytical story in an Arabic periodical on health-related issues.
According to Maryam Bin Fahad, Executive Director, Dubai Press Club, the new award is consistent with the continuous process of change and advancement that the Arab Journalism Award has been undergoing over the last seven rounds.

She said that the occupational and ethical message of the Award consisted in promoting the creative and specialization standards in the Arab media, in line with the tremendous changes taking place in Information Technology and communications.
'Media organizations are now in a position to use the latest techniques to serve health journalism in a big way. We aim at strengthening coverage in this crucial sphere and encouraging journalists to align their professional work with their larger commitment to the society,' she added.

Bin Fahad said that the Award strived to promote specialized journalistic work in different spheres, including health/medicine in an effort to complement and improve on the giant strides the region has taken in quality medical care.

'We do not have many periodicals devoted to health issues in Arabic. We hope the award will encourage journalists to gain deeper knowledge in and to create awareness among the people on health issues. The developments in this dynamic sector must reach the public so that people benefit from them much more,' she pointed out, disclosing that the Arab Journalism Award General Secretariat had finalized a comprehensive development plan to widen the scope and content of the award to accompany the fast-paced changes that sweep the Arab media sector.

The Board of Arab Journalism Award has recently announced January 15, 2009 as the deadline for submitting entries for consideration for the award. The Arab Journalism Awards program began in November 1999 under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who tasked Dubai Press Club to set up the awards in a way that ensures total transparency, objectivity and inclusivity. Since its inception, the selection process for award has been marked by a high degree of transparency and objectivity.

The different categories of the award include Political Journalism, Interviews, Columns, Business Journalism, Investigative journalism, Cultural journalism, Sports Journalism, Environmental Journalism, IT Journalism, Journalism for Children, Press Photography, Cartooning and Health Journalism
