Thailand's ruling party to punish MPs absent from House meeting

BANGKOK, September 8 (TNA) - Pheu Thai Party executives will meet Monday to probe the absence of 26 MPs during an important sitting on Thailand’s charter amendment, which caused the party a day of shame when the House had to adjourn due to lack of quorum. Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said the incident last week caused embarrassment to Pheu Thai Party, which was the one to propose for the amendment. Prompong warned if the MPs fail to justify their absence, they might not find a place in the next general election. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told reporters earlier the party management will adopt measures to encourage parliament attendance of MPs in the future. Meanwhile, the Pheu Thai Party has formally requested the House speaker to probe opposition Democrat MP Shane Thaugsuban for his explicit chair-throwing act last Thursday, saying punishment was needed for such behaviour.
