Storm warning for Sydney area cancelled

AAP - A severe thunderstorm warning for Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong has been cancelled by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).
"The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but thunderstorms are still occurring in the northeast," the BoM website said at 6.38pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Forecasters will monitor the situation and issue further warnings later if necessary.
The BoM issued the warning earlier on Saturday, after a spectacular lightning storm
across Sydney on Friday night.
Hundreds of travellers were left stranded at Sydney Airport and Qantas said it was
forced to accommodate 1,200 people in hotels in the city, while 900 people were left
stranded in Melbourne.
Flights had returned to normal on Saturday, a spokeswoman said.
A Virgin Blue spokeswoman said about eight flights were cancelled on Saturday
morning because planes had remained in other ports due to bad weather.
About 200 of the airline's passengers were stranded in Sydney on Friday night.
Services returned to normal mid-morning, the spokeswoman said.
Sydney Airport has advised it was experiencing no disruptions on Saturday due to
weather.
However, passengers are still advised to contact individual airlines for information
about their flights.
