Groundbreaking Research On Malaria Wins 2013 Mahathir Science Award

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Australian scientist Professor Alan Cowman has been awarded the 2013 Mahathir Science Award for his groundbreaking research
on malaria.
The announcement was made by Mahathir Science Award Foundation (MSAF) chairman Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid Thursday.
Ahmad Sarji (left) said the research done by Cowman had led to effective understanding of the pathogenesis of the infection and innovative technologies
development of reverse genetics of Plasmodium Falciparum, as well as described the first gene knock-out for this organism.
"These contributions have led to the identification of better target for the development of new drugs against the infection, and accelerate efforts to solve
one of the major health problems in the tropics," he told a press conference when announcing the winner here.
Cowman is currently the Head of Division of Infection and Immunity at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research based in Melbourne.
His research has paved way further towards finding a candidate vaccine for malaria infection that continues killing millions of people in Africa and Asia.
Ahmad Sarji said the winner had been chosen based on meritorious achievement that brought significant impact in improving the quality of life, and opened up
new opportunities for future advancement of science and technology.
For this year, MSAF has received 29 nominations from 11 countries, including Malaysia, Australia, India, Egypt, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand, England, United
States and China.
"Each nomination has undergone a stringent selection process conducted by the distinguished Fellows of the Academy of Science Malaysia, and also evaluated
by International Advisory Panel comprising Nobel Laureates and world-renowned scientists," he said.
He hoped that more individuals and companies would come forward and contribute generously to their cause, to advance tropical science research
agenda for the benefit of mankind.
MSAF is bestowed upon any scientist or institution worldwide in recognising achievements and innovations towards solving the problems in the tropics through
science and technology.
The winner of this award will receive US$100,000, gold medal and certificate.
"The official prize-giving ceremony is expected to be held next year," said Ahmad Sarji.
The award is named after Malaysia's longest-serving former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. (photoBERNAMA)
