Yonhap News Agency opens photo exhibition

SEOUL, Nov. 4 (Yonhap) -- A photo exhibition kicked off in Seoul on Monday to display more than 100 Yonhap News Agency photographs of historical moments that have made local newspaper headlines over the past three decades. The photo exhibit on the first floor of the Yonhap News Agency building shows some 120 images such as major disasters and incidents that have happened at home and abroad, big diplomatic events hosted by Seoul as well as South Korean presidents and famous sports figures. The exhibition was timed to mark the completion of Yonhap's new office building. The news agency demolished its old company building in downtown Seoul in 2011 and has built the new 17-story headquarters on the same site. Images on display include a photograph showing the collapse of a department store in southern Seoul in 1995 that killed 500 people and injured 938 as well as photos documenting South Korea's hosting of major diplomatic events such as the 2005 summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and G20 summit in 2010. Also on exhibit are images of South Korea's prominent sports figures such as baseballer Ryu Hyun-jin of the Los Angeles Dodgers and figure skater Kim Yu-na competing at major sports events, and Yonhap reporters spotted at scenes of major incidents as they struggled to collect news. In addition, visitors can see some 20 images taken by journalists of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) member companies such as Xinhua, Kyodo News and Pyongyang's Korean Central News Agency. The exhibit will run till the end of this year and admission is free. sshim@yna.co.kr (END)
