M'SIA HOPEFUL OF BRINGING BACK GUANTANAMO BAY DETAINEES
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia hopes to be able to bring home two of its citizens held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp when Barack Obama takes over as the president of the United States in January, Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
He said the United States had all this while ignored a foreign ministry
request for the Malaysian detainees Mohd Farik Amin and Mohammed Nazir Lep,
suspected to be terrorists, to be allowed to face the penalty back in Malaysia.
"No charges have been brought against them, and this is worse than the ISA
(Internal Security Act)," he said after the official presentation of the South
East Asia Write Award 2008 winner here.
The dean of the Faculty of Artistry and Creative Technology at Universiti
Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and script-writer, Prof Hatta Azad Khan, received the
award from the organisers in Bangkok in August.
MARA University of Technology (Malay: Universiti Teknologi MARA) (UiTM) is
a Malaysian public university.
Washington had alleged that Mohd Farik and Mohammed Nazir had been selected
by the Jemaah Islamiah leader Hambali as members of a suicide assault squad
which had targeted Los Angeles.
On Thaksin Shinawatra, Rais said the former Thai prime minister was not
regarded as a refugee and there was no reason why he could not enter Malaysia.
He said if the refugee status was raised, the government would refer to the
Geneva Convention pertaining to refugees before taking any action.
Rais had said that Malaysia did not rule out granting political asylum to
Thaksin and that he was free to transit through the country.
Britain has revoked Thaksin's entry visa to the United Kingdom because of
his conviction in Thailand for corruption.
On another matter, Rais said the foreign ministry would collaborate with
the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka to promote local literary works worldwide.
"We have 104 Malaysian missions throughout the world which can help promote
Malay literary works at the international level," he said.
