Arroyo leaves Osaka for L.A., husband heads home after treatment+

OSAKA, Nov. 22 Kyodo - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo left for Los Angeles on Saturday from Kansai International Airport in Osaka, where her chartered flight made an
emergency landing shortly after midnight Friday when her husband fell ill.

Jose Miguel Arroyo, 62, complained of a sharp pain in his abdomen and back --
symptoms often observed in a heart attack -- during the flight from Manila,
which had been heading for Los Angeles, and was taken to a local hospital, a
senior Philippine government official said.
He headed home from Kansai International Airport on Saturday as his condition
stabilized after treatment at the Osaka Prefecture-run Senshu Critical Care
Medical Center in Izumisano, the official said.
After spending the night at the medical center with her husband, the Philippine
president left the airport and is scheduled to stop in Los Angeles before
flying to Lima to attend this weekend's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum
summit.
Her husband, a lawyer, is known to have heart problems, having undergone triple
bypass surgery at a Manila hospital in April last year.
