Hynix develops world's fastest graphic DRAM
SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world's No. 2 memory
chip maker, said Sunday it has developed a new powerful DRAM tailored for
high-powered graphic cards in computers and video game consoles.
The 1-gigabit GDDR chip, which has the world's fastest 7-gigabit-per-second
processing speed, can run on a relatively small power of 1.35 volts and is
suitable for use in heavy graphics on computers and video game systems, Hynix
said in a statement.
The previously fastest graphic DRAM model provided a processing speed of 5
gigabits per second. Mass production of the new product will begin in the first
half of 2009, Hynix said.
According to market research agency Mercury Research, the GDDR5 chips are raising
a notable presence in the graphics DRAM market recently and is expected to
account for 19 percent of the entire graphics DRAM market next year and up to 36
percent by 2010.
