Son, Liem lead Vietnam to 5-2-2 record at Olympiad
Hanoi (VNA) - The Vietnam men's team have gained five wins, two draws and two losses in the on-going Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.
The team, led by International Grand Masters (IGM) Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son,
Le Quang Liem, Dao Thien Hai, Tu Hoang Thong and Nguyen Van Huy took wins
over Singapore , Luxembourg , Japan , Iceland and the Netherlands
before drawing with Cuba and China .
Vietnam suffered losses to Ukraine and England .
Son and Liem are two young prodigy chess players. Thus far in the
competition Son has claimed 5.5 individual points after five games, while
Liem clinched 6.5 points himself.
At 14 years and nine months, Son became the second youngest IGM in world
chess history. The youngest person ever awarded the prestigious title was
French born Etienme Bacrot, who became a Grand Master in March 1997 when he
was just 14 years and two months old.
Liem earned the IGM title at age 15 right after the Chess Olympiad ended in
Turin in 2006.
His most successful year to date was 2005, when he took home an individual
gold and team silver at the Asian Chess Championship.
The Vietnamese will compete at their best in their final 10 th and 11 th
round games of the championship today.
Chess has become one of Vietnam 's strongest sports at several
