Counterproductive initiative with UNGA resolution to impede Ukraine settlement-RF Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, March 28 (Itar-Tass) - The counterproductive initiative with the resolution of the UN General Assembly on Ukraine would only impede the efforts aimed at the settlement of the internal political crisis in the country, Russia’s Foreign Ministry stated on Friday. “The persistence with which the authorities in Kiev and the foreign ‘advocates’ representing their interests are trying to distort the essence of the alarming processes taking place in Ukraine, cannot cause anything but regret,” the ministry noted. “The whole unexpended potential of the propaganda machine of the ‘cold war’ times is used in order to push into the background the fact of the deepest internal political crisis in Ukraine and shift the responsibility for the escalation of tension onto the Russian Federation.” The RF Foreign Ministry emphasised that “the results of the heavy-handed interference of a number of Western countries in Ukraine’s affairs are evident: the unconstitutional change of the government in Kiev, the destruction of the state administration system, including at the regional and local levels, the dysfunctional forces of law and order, the rampancy of extremists and fascist elements, mass violation of human rights, the threat to security of national and language minorities, further aggravation of the socio-economic situation.” “The wide difference in the positions of the UN member states, a large number of those abstained and not present at the voting have become an eloquent testimony to the rejection of the one-sided treatment of the developments in Ukraine. At the same time it is known what kind of brazen pressure was exerted, even political blackmail and economic threats used against a number of the member states to make them vote ‘for,’” the RF Foreign Ministry said. “We call on the constructively minded and independently thinking members of the international community to focus their efforts on the real assistance to stabilisation of the situation in this country and display respect for the results of the free will expression of the Crimean population that has already played its historic part, and there is no use in challenging it,” the ministry said in a commentary. The UN General Assembly on Thursday held a plenary meeting at which it considered the draft resolution of the General Assembly “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine” that was initiated by Ukraine’s delegation jointly with a number of co-authors. The same as in the case of the draft resolution of the UN Security Council that was not adopted on March 15, the GA draft resolution contained mainly a call on the UN member states not to recognise the results of the referendum as a result of which the Crimean people successfully exercised their right to self-determination.
