IBM MALAYSIA STILL SEES GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES DESPITE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), Nov 26 (Bernama) -- IBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd still sees growth opportunities despite the global economic challenges as more companies adopt information technology to become more efficient and effective.

Its managing director, Ou Shian Waei, said opportunities existed in the
telecommunications, retail banking and government sectors.

"We will continue to listen to our customers from telcos, finance and
government as they look for ways to be more effective and efficient," he said
after signing a memorandum of understanding with KBU International College to
launch IBM System z Academic Initiative programme here Wednesday.

International Business Machines Corporation, abbreviated IBM and nicknamed
"Big Blue" (for its official corporate color), is a multinational computer
technology and consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, United
States.

The company is one of the few information technology companies with a
continuous history dating back to the 19th century. IBM manufactures and sells
computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure services, hosting
services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to
nanotechnology.

The collaboration will provide KBU's academic staff access to IBM's
software, hardware, courseware, faculty education, contests and other resources.

Ou said the partnership would help educators teach the fundamentals of
enterprise systems.

He said it would incorporate examples through the use of practical
applications and laboratory exercise and connect educators and students with
IBM's clients.

With the global resurgence in mainframe computing, Ou said, the demand for
skills in mainframe technology outweighed the supply.

"Upon graduation, the students will understand the relevance and
versatility
of the mainframe and possess the necessary in-demand skills for employment by
IBM, System z clients and its business partners," he said.

Meanwhile, Ou said IBM's performance in Malaysia for the third quarter
ended Sept 30, 2008 was one of the strongest among growth markets like China,
India, Russia and Brazil.

"The strong performance is attributed to our strategy of investing in
emerging economies as they build their infrastructures.

"Enterprise system, mainframe and service segments also boost the company's
performance," he said.

He said IBM would continue to focus on growth opportunities in
Malaysia.

"IBM Malaysia is fortunate in that the country has the right skills and
incentives from the government in creating the open environment have allowed
companies to continue to invest and grow.

"Malaysia provides a value for money for IBM to continue to invest here,"
he
said.
