Xe Pien-Xe Namnoy hydropower plant programme approved

(KPL) The government has given green lights to investors of the Republic of Korea and Thailand to resume their development activities on the Xe Pien and Xe Namnoy hydropower plant in Champassak province.
The SK Engineering and Construction Co., the Korea Western Power Co., and the Ratchaburi Electricity Generation Holdings Co., (Thailand) signed an agreement on the resumption of their activities last week with the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
According to the agreement, the companies will spend 18 months on designing the plant and studying the effects of the project on the environment and communities.
The plant will have a generation capacity of 390 MW. The power generated from the plant in the next four years will be exported to Thailand as in the cases of Nam Ngum 2, Nam Ngiep 1, Nam Theun 1, Theun Hinboun, and Hongsa Lignite Powerhouse.
Early this year, Champassak held a seminar on the possible effects of the Xe Pien-Xe Namnoy Hydropower plant to the environment and communities in the province.
Two neighbouring countries, Vietnam and Thailand, who have a growing demand, are the main power importers of electricity from Laos.
