UN Assistant Sec-Gen Simonovic to visit Kiev, Donetsk and Odessa

GENEVA, May 15 (Itar-Tass) - United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic will visit Kiev, Donetsk and Odessa during his five-day trip to Ukraine. Simonovic arrived in Kiev on Wednesday evening, May 14, for talks with government officials, members of civil society and the ombudsman. On Saturday, May 17, he is scheduled to travel to Donetsk and then on Sunday, May 18, to Odessa. In March, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights set up a monitoring mission to collect information about possible human rights violations in Ukraine. It is working in such cities as Kiev, Lvov, Odessa, Donetsk and Kharkov. On April 15, the Mission issued its first report on the human rights situation in Ukraine, which covered a period up to April 2. A new report is to be released on Friday, March 16.
