VIRTUALISATION AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR COMPANIES IN DIFFICULT TIMES
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama) -- At a time where margins and budgets
are tightening, it is also an opportunity for companies to consider
virtualisation, said Yasir Yousuff, the chief marketing and operations officer
at Microsoft Malaysia.
With desktop and datacentre virtualisation offerings available from
Microsoft and its partners, customers are adopting its solutions because of
better value and in making IT operations more dynamic, he said during a recent
Microsft IT Leadership Roundtable.
Costing lower than other virtualisation solutions, Microsoft software meet
customer needs from the desktop to the datacentre in an integrated offering on
the platform they know, he added.
"It is in difficult times that we discover diamonds in the rough, as
organisations have to evolve, become more productive and efficient in order to
be resilient," he said during his presentation at a roundtable session on
Creating Business Value Together.
"We hear customers asking us to help save time and money, increase
productivity and grow their businesses. An integral part of ensuring resilience
is the application of technology and one example is virtualisation.
"Virtualisation is a technology that makes it possible to run more than one
operating system on a single computer.Virtualisation reduces costs and lowers
energy consumption by enabling organisations to use more of the computing power
that they already own," he explained.
Microsoft has made available the System Center Virtual Machine Manager
2008,
Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 and the new Microsoft Hyper-V Server
2008 as a no-cost download for its customer.
Together with Hewlett Packard and IDC, the leadership roundtable introduced
how these technologies can help organisations today with predictable, low-risk
ways in beginning the transition to a virtualised environment.
Malaysian businesses are already reaping the rewards of Microsoft's
virtualisation solutions.
One such company is Ranhill WorleyParsons Sdn Bhd, a leading provider of
professional services to the energy, resource and complex process industries
globally.
The company relies on an agile and flexible IT infrastructure to deliver
the
expanding business applications required for sustaining growth.
Ranhill WorleyParsons has deployed the Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V to help
reduce the growing costs associated with rapid expansion.
"Virtualisation with the Windows Server 2008 provides the ability to
deliver applications quickly, which is what we need to differentiate
ourselves from the competition," said Mahmood Salim, ICT Manager of Ranhill
WorleyParsons.
