Ukrainian president agrees to humanitarian corridors for exodus of civilians

KIEV, June 10 (Itar-Tass) - Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has ordered to set up a rescue corridor for the civilians wishing to leave the areas of fighting, the presidential press service reported. On June 4, Russia called for immediate evacuation of refugees through humanitarian corridors. Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Ivanov said the issue was very acute and that Russian regions bordering on Ukraine were ready to accommodate refugees. Reports from Kiev said Poroshenko had met with the heads of Ukraine's Security Service /SBU/, the Interior Ministry, the Defence Ministry and the State Emergency Situations Service. "To prevent further casualties in the area of the anti-terrorist operation, the Ukrainian president ordered the heads of law-enforcement bodies to create all the necessary condition for civilian population wishing to leave," the report said. Russia’s Rostov region has already created a network of health centers ready to provide decent accommodation to Ukrainian citizens needing protection. The Voronezh, Bryansk and Belgorod regions are setting up similar refugee centers. Poroshenko instructed the government to arrange the transportation of people, provide medical services and set up a network of mobile food-, water- and medicine-supply centers for civilians. Russia has been promoting with insistence the idea of humanitarian corridors in Ukraine. The provision was included in the Russia-proposed draft resolution of the UN Security Council, along with the demand that any violence should be stopped. The western members of the UN Security Council did not support the document. Learn more on itar-tass.com
