EU:Business relations with Thailand remain intact
BANGKOK, June 24 (TNA) - The European Union (EU) says that the EU's Monday decision on suspending exchange visits of EU and Thai authorities
and on inking a cooperation pact is not a boycott and trade, investment and tourism relations, as well as free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Thailand will be carried on as usual.
EU Ambassador to Thailand Jesus Miguel Sanz made the confirmation, after his meeting with Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow, in his capacity as Acting Foreign Minister.
Sanz also said that the EU still recognizes Thailand's significance and expects the Thai Kingdom's important roles in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and that the EU's decision will not affect the ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting next month.
Sihasak acknowledged at a press conference, after the meeting, that he expressed disappointment with the EU's suspension of its senior authorities' visit to Thailand and delay of its signing of a cooperation agreement with the Kingdom, claiming that the 28-nation EU appeared to pay no attention to the improving situation and a move to restore democracy in Thailand.
Sihasak told the press conference that Thailand disagrees with the EU's unilateral response, as Bangkok has tried to have discussions with allies to create understanding and also expects the EU's understanding.
Regarding the EU's postponement of signing its Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) with Thailand, Sihasak opined that the EU should consider mutual interest and international relations. (TNA)
