SUSILO WANTS INDONESIAN PEOPLE TO LEARN FROM THAILAND AND INDIA
JAKARTA, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Unwilling to see the Mumbai bombing and the political crisis in Thailand being repeated in Indonesia, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono today asked the Indonesian people to learn the lessons from both incidents.
Since Indonesia had experienced similar incidents in 1998, he said the
people of the republic could not afford to be passive and underestimate the risk
the crisis in other countries could bring to the country with a population of
230 million.
"We have to beef up our security and capability to face similar threats,"
he told a media conference at the Istana Merdeka, here Monday.
Susilo was also worried that certain groups with political interest would
use both tragedies as a bait to get the people to support their race for the
general and presidential election next year.
"Hence, I hope we will control ourselves and let the democracy process to
take place in an orderly manner," said the president who had also ordered
security measures to be increased to face any possible threats.
