Kyrgyz-Russian hydro power plant to cost $3 bln - Kyrgyz PM

BISHKEK, July 23 (Itar-Tass) - Construction of a Kyrgyz-Russian major hydro power plant Kambar-Аta-1 on the Natyn River in Kyrgyzstan will cost investors about $3 billion, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Joomart Otorbaev told the news conference on Wednesday.
“The government has decided to build a higher dam at this plant as this will considerably increase the overall efficiency,” he said.
Kyrgyzstan and Russia earlier agreed to construct the plant and a cascade of four plants in the Naryn River upper reaches on a parity basis. Cascade construction is already underway.
Russia’s Inter RAO UES would manage construction works, whereas the Russian government would prepare a feasibility study, Prime Minister added.
Under the new conditions, Kambar-Ata would have an output of 1,860 MW, almost 1.5 times more than in Kyrgyzstan’s currently largest Toktogulskaya plant, said Otorbaev adding Russian experts would come to the republic in the near future to coordinate Kambar-Ata-1 details.
