-TURKISH STATE MINISTER SAYS GAP BETWEEN DEVELOPED AND UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES GROW

ANKARA (A.A) - 04.12.2008 - Turkish State Minister Said Yazıcıoglu said Thursday that the prosperity gap between developed countries and underdeveloped countries grew.
Delivering the opening speech of the Asia, Caribbean and the Pacific, Least Developed Countries High Level Workshop,  Yazicioglu said the global environment retained ceratin risks for least developed countries.
Yazicioglu said while the least developed countries enjoyed little of the benefits of globalisation, they were more vulnerable to risks and extra costs brought along with it. He said this could increase poverty and stability in the least developed countries.
Yazicioglu said in order to help these countries overcome poverty, it was necessary to contribute to their adaption to global competition and extend support to regional projects.
Yazicioglu said development aids granted to least developed countries by Turkey, amounted to 714 million USD, which corresponds to the 18 percent of its national income.
"Turkey is determined to do everything it can do to fulfill its promises to least developed countries. This determinism of Turkish government is shared by Turkish private sector and civil society," said Yazıcıoglu.
