Suspect initially found involving in murder of two Britons

BANGKOK, October 2 (TNA) - New National Police Chief Police General Somyot Pumpanmuang says that a Myanmar migrant worker has been initially found to involve in a recent murder of two Britons on Koh Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand off Surat Thani Province in the Thai South. Police General Somyot said on Thursday morning that the suspect was being seriously questioned and a preliminary result showed he involved in the murder of the two Britons in mid-September. Police General Somyot acknowledged that witnesses have been questioned and DNA tests on over 100 people have been conducted, while police were taking careful steps to arrest culprits. Meanwhile, British Ambassador to Thailand Mark Kent met the new Thai national police chief to follow up progress on an official investigation into the murder of the two British tourists on Sept 15 and to congratulate him on the new position, while the new Thai national police chief expressed confidence that a culprit would be arrested. After the half-an-hour meeting, the British top envoy told journalists that Thai authorities were fully cooperative and proved that they tried their best in the investigation. The national police chief then told reporters that he informed the British ambassador that Thai police's actions in the case meet international standards, while the British top envoy offered assistance, namely equipment and technology, for DNA tests but insisting that London will not intervene in the work of Thai police in the case. So far, DNA tests have pointed that suspects are Asian, but Thai police have not ruled out the possibility of a European's involvement. The national police chief revealed that he will invite the British ambassador to visit Koh Tao to follow up the investigation there. (TNA)
