PERMANENT REP ATTENDS EVENT TO READ UDHR

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations Mr O.Och took part in a public reading of the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) held on December 9, the eve of the Human Rights Day. Mr Och read the #8 article of the UDHR in Mongolian, which says:"Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law". The UDHR has been translated into some 300 languages and regional dialects. The event of reading the UDHR ran in the Schomburg Center, New York City. It is not accidental to choose the event’s venue in Schomburg Center because this center is the headquarters of the Cultural Research Center of Black People, and the UN GA launched this year the International Decade for People of African Descent. At the event which hosted by UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Mr Ivan Simonovic, the UDHR’s preamble was read by Mr Jan Eliasson, A UN Deputy Secretary-General and his daughter. Other some 30 articles were read by representatives and Ambassadors of over 30 countries, international organizations and students. The UDHR is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot, Paris. The Declaration arose directly from the experience of the Second World War and represents the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. The Declaration consists of thirty articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions, and other laws. It has been translated into some 300 languages and regional dialects. Since 1950, the Day of Human Rights is celebrated on the day of the UDHR’s adoption.
