Lao alcoholic drinks are making way into Japanese market

(KPL) A Japanese investor has invested USD500,000 to produce rum, shochu and Nam Oi and they are for the local market and for export to countries like Japan, Europe, Russia and America.
Eighty per cent of our products will be exported,” said Mr. Yasusuke Tomita, President of the Lao Agro Organic & Distillery Inc, during the inauguration of the company in Vientiane, on Wednesday.
He told KPL that his company will be exporting its organic products, called LAODI, the abbreviation of the company’s name, from August 2009.
Mr. Yasusuke said he sent his products to Japan in March this year to find out if they are acceptable to Japanese consumers and he added, “We are confident that our products are of the highest quality and they can access the Japanese market.”
“Laos produces high quality sugar cane and the soil that they are grown in is not contaminated by any toxic chemical substance,” said Mr. Sihattha Rasphone the director of this company.
The Japanese Ambassador to Laos Mr Masaaki Miyashita was present at the inauguration and he said,” The governments of Laos and Japan are making efforts to increase Japanese investment in Laos and the two sides had established a cooperative association to develop strategies to get more Japanese to invest in Laos.”
“The success of the company will be an encouraging sign and it would get more Japanese investors to invest in Laos,” added the Japanese ambassador.
