'TASTE OF MALAYSIA' RETURNS TO HONG KONG
From Tham Choy Lin
HONG KONG, Dec 13 (Bernama) - Selected snacks, curry sauces and instant
food produced by Malaysian small and medium enterprises hit the shelves of 19
stores of well-known Wellcome supermarket chain here Friday under the 'Taste of
Malaysia" promotion.
This is the second time the supermarket is hosting products from Malaysian
SMEs since 2005 in collaboration with Malaysia's Domestic Trade and Consumer
Affairs Ministry which was represented by Deputy Minister Jelaing Mersat at
the launch.
"The similar purchasing trend by the Hong Kong residents and those in
Malaysia as well as the overall market demand have led the ministry to favour
Hong Kong over other locations. Hong Kong is also the gateway for market access
to China, an important trading partner for Malaysia," Jelaing said.
He said the government would continue to support SMEs especially
through the current difficult times because of the gobal financial
crisis.
The deputy minister found his favourite snack, tapioca chips, among the 48
products from 13 SMEs selected by Hong Kong buyers for the two week campaign
lasting until Dec 26.
This was a departure from the 2005 promotion which featured 257 products
from 40 enterprises and only two - instant coffee and ready-made spicy pastes -
joined the permanent list of products retailed by Wellcome which has over 250
stores here.
The goodies which were repacked and relabeled to meet mandatory
requirements were selected according to local taste, said Diane Chiu, marketing
director at The Dairy Farm Company Ltd which owns Wellcome and also Giant
supermarkets in Malaysia.
She said the 19 stores selected were the busiest outlets for Wellcome and
there will be sample tasting for customers.
"Hong Kong people like to try new things, that's why we keep bringing in
new products including food which they have not tasted before," Chiu
said.
The enterprises picked are among suppliers to Giant which expects sales of
RM90 million from goods produced by SMEs this year.(US$1=RM3.62)
After "Taste of Malaysia" kicked off in Hong Kong three years ago, similar
promotions were held in Singapore, Jakarta, Dubai, London and Paris.
