OIC SEC-GEN CONCERNED OVER LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN SOMALIA BY MUIN ABDUL MAJID

DUBAI, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) secretary-general Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has expressed his deep concern over the latest developments in Somalia following the decision of President Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed to dismiss Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein and to dissolve the transitional government.

He noted that this development, which comes as a culmination of tension and
division between the president and the prime minister, would not serve the peace
process and the overall interest of Somalia, especially with the escalation of
violence in the country.

"Prof Ihsanoglu reiterated his earlier appeal to the two leaders to resolve
their differences and recommit themselves to peace building in Somalia
especially after the signing of the ceasefire agreement between the
Transitional Federal Government and the Alliance for the Reliberation of
Somalia on Oct 26, 2008 In Djibouti, and the decision by the two parties to form
a national unity government," said an OIC statement.

The OIC chief also reaffirmed the grouping's commitment as an observer
under the Djibouti agreement to fully support the peace process in Somalia and
contribute towards the alleviation of the humanitarian situation in the
country.

It was reported that Abdulahi Yusuf on Tuesday named Mohamed Mohamoud
Gamadere as new prime minister to replace Nur Hassan whom the president sacked
at the weekend.
