IWK INKS MOU TO EXPAND SEWERAGE SERVICES IN MEDAN CITY

MEDAN (Indonesia), Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian national sewerage company,
Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK), ECO Asia and PDAM Tirtanadi, Medan City
water and sewerage utility firm, signed an MoU to expand sewerage services in
Medan City.

The tripartite MoU, inked on Dec 5, at the PDAM Tirtanadi office here, is
also to develop human capital for environmental projects in Asia.

IWK was represented by its Planning and Engineering general manager Ir Mohd
Haniffa Abdul Hamid while PDAM Tirtanadi by President Director Drs Sjahril
Effendy Pasaribu and ECO Asia by Niels Van Dijk.

Haniffa said IWK was appointed by ECO Asia as a "mentor" to PDAM Tirtanadi
to launch the promotions and communications campaign to boost awareness among
the people of Medan on the importance of having a comprehensive sewerage
services system and to increase the number of premises with direct sanitation
system linkage to the main public sewerage system in the city.

"IWK will also share its expertise and experience in carrying out the
sewerage services promotions campaign in Malaysia with PDAM Tirtanadi, a
state-owned company in Medan," he said.

"The appointment of IWK as a mentor in Indonesia by ECO Asia, supported
by
the U.S. Government, was made after a thorough evaluation on several other
utility companies in the Asean region.

"IWK was picked based on the work quality and its 15 years of technical
know-how in providing sewerage seervices to 17 million consumers in Malaysia.

"This is an honour and an international recognition to a utility company
in Malaysia," Haniffa said.

The MoU will pave the way to increase the number of premises linked to the
main sewerage system in Medan which currently only numbered 11,500 or 57,500
people enjoyed the facility.

Drs Sjahril said PDAM Tirtanadi said it would benefit from IWK's experience
in sharing the communications strategy to boost consumers' awareness on the
importance of having a decent sewerage system.

He said the move would help conserve the environment in this city,
especially water resources, from being polluted by effluence.

"We believe with IWK's technical know-how and communications experience in
managing the sewerage industry in Malaysia, PDAM Tirtanadi will gain immensely
from the MoU. We are thankful to ECO Asia for giving us the best working partner
to realise our plan," he added.
