ZAID IBRAHIM & CO SET TO TAP INTO MIDDLE EASTERN MARKET IN 2009
By Voon Miaw Ping
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's largest law firm Zaid Ibrahim
&
Co is set to spread its wing in the Middle East after it successfully opened its
office in Dubai in July.
The Dubai office is the firm's sixth overseas office after Singapore,
Jakarta, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.
Zaid Ibrahim & Co chairman Dr Nik Norzrul Thani said with Dubai as its
platform, the firm is set to continue its foray by offering and providing
professional services to various other jurisdictions, with special interest in
Islamic finance and Syariah law, in the Middle East by 2009.
"This continuous impetus and momentum will provide the firm with solid
foundation to position itself as a true gateway for Malaysian and Southeast
Asian clients seeking legal and business supports for their existing and
commercial interests in the Middle Eastern region and vice versa," he told
Bernama in an interview here, Saturday.
The Dubai office is also the first law firm in Southeast Asia to be
registered with the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC).
"With our strong expertise in these fields, we believe that we can fill the
gap and be the forerunner in the global competition," he said.
Zaid Ibrahim & Co was founded by politician Zaid Ibrahim in 1987 and
todate has 160 lawyers.
On another issue, Nik Norzrul said, although Zaid had relinquished his
position and shares in the firm after he was appointed Minister in the Prime
Minister's Department after the March general election, the firm would maintain
its name as it was already an established brand.
He said that neither Zaid's departure nor his recent embroilment in the
country's political spat affected the firm's image and performance.
Zaid resigned as the de facto law minister and senator on Sept 17 to
protest
the government's decision to detain a journalist, a blogger and a People's Pact
(Pakatan Rakyat member of parliament under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
He was sacked from United Malays National Organization (UMNO) on Dec 2 for
violating the party's ethics when he was seen attending numerous events
organised by the People's Pact (Pakatan Rakyat).
"Zaid Ibrahim & Co is a brand built over the years and in fact today, it
continues to grow from strength to strength," said Nik Narzrul who took over the
firm's chairmanship from Zaid in March.
Citing big names in the industry like Shearn Delamore, Albar & Co, and
multinational companies such as Ernst & Young and Bloomberg, he said, there was
no necessity for Zaid Ibrahim & Co to change its name.
He said the firm was known for its professionalism and big spectre of
clientele and not for having Zaid as its icon.
