LG Display develops electric-solar LCD panel

SEOUL, Dec. 22 (Yonhap) -- LG Display Co., the world's second-largest maker of
liquid crystal displays (LCD), said Monday it has developed an LCD panel that can
run on either electricity or solar power.

The company said in a statement that an electricity-powered backlight powers the
14.1-inch LCD for personal computers indoors, while it can run on a solar panel
outdoors.
The amount of electricity consumed can be reduced to a quarter of that needed to
operate existing LCDs, a company official said.
LG Display said it will unveil the prototype of the newly developed panel at the
International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest home
electronics fair, in January.
