More green seen along Thai - Myanmar border

KANCHANABURI, June 14 (TNA) - In an attempt to strengthen relations between Thailand and neighbour Myanmar, soldiers of the two countries on Sunday joined in planting trees along the border in Kanchanaburi province while more than 3,000 cyclists rode bicycles and crossed the border into that country. Soldiers from the Surasri Task Force and their fellows from Myanmar early in the day planted trees under the programme called ‘ASEAN Forest’ at a Thai border village in Muang district of Kanchanaburi. The programme is aimed at conserving forest at the border and simultaneously turn it in to a tourism destination to cater the ASEAN Economic Community, due to be implemented at the end of this year. Shortly afterward, Kanchanaburi governor Wanchai Osukonthip presided over the release of a caravan comprising over 3,000 cyclists who rode bicycles from the provincial seat to the Myanmar district of Tanaosri in Dawei province. Total distance is 20 kilometres. Several interesting activities will also be organised from this afternoon until tonight. They include cock-fighting, beauty contest, boxing and a display of goods produced by the two countries. (TNA)
