CALL FOR CONCERTED ACTION TO RIDE ECONOMIC QUAGMIRE

IPOH (Malaysia), Dec 30 (Bernama) -- The Regent of the northern state of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, has called for concerted action on development efforts to ride the wave of the global economic quagmire in the new Islamic year 1430 Hijrah.

He urged leaders to reduce polemics, politicking, squabbles and arguments,
saying a heavy dosage of politics was not only unproductive but also
counter-productive.

"In confronting the situation, the leaders should give priority to the
people, seek consensus, streamline approaches in tackling problems and
challenges which require the implementation of unified approaches and
understanding," he said when launching the Ma'al Hijrah 1430 celebration here
Monday.

He said the year should reflect the nation's resilience in weeding out
corruption, and courage to strive for justice by punishing those who abuse
trust, confidence and responsibility.

"1430 Hijrah is the year for the people to show their sincerity and honesty
in line with the teachings of Islam, to be willing to conduct self-appraisal,
and to show a high degree of self-accountability by resigning on one's own
accord when one's name has been tainted or tarnished," he said.

Raja Dr Nazrin Shah said the rate of economic growth in 1430 Hijrah was
expected to be the lowest in 25 years, and would dampen consumer and corporate
spending.

"Our country will not be spared the adverse effects of the economic
downturn. How many jobs can be created? And what will be the fate of our
graduates and those leaving the campuses and schools?

"How about those who will be out of jobs? How about the plight of those who
are in the yoke of poverty?" he asked.

He said the economic quagmire was caused by an accumulation of prolonged
destructive activities, in terms of mismanagement, criminal breach of trust, and
wrong priorities in managing the rich natural resources.

Raja Dr Nazrin Shah said the world had witnessed how the wealth had been
spent to strengthen arsenal and military might to enable the rich and developed
countries to attack other countries on the pretext of implementing justice in
the name of democracy.

"The sluggish economy is God's reminder to mankind on the need for people
who are entrusted with power to realise their responsibility in fulfilling their
duty to human beings and doing justice to the environment.

"(It is a reminder on) how some among those with authority are crazy for
power, greedy and arrogant, and often abuse power to the extent of triggering
various disasters," he said.

Raja Dr Nazrin Shah said the country should have an effective instrument to
monitor the abuse of power and take corrective measures to fulfill the needs of
the people who wished for transparent governance, zero corruption and a just
judicial system.
