POLICE IDENTIFY SEVERAL MEN BEHIND SEDITIOUS WEBLOG
IPOH (Malaysia), Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Police have identified several men
believed to have posted articles and pictures that insulted Prophet Muhammad on
a weblog, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar said Tuesday.
"The investigation is conducted under the Commercial Crime Investigation
Department director with close collaboration with the Communications and
Multimedia Commission to trace the people involved in publishing the weblog.
"We now know the weblog uses a server from overseas and not in Malaysia.
This makes the task difficult but we will try our best," he told reporters
after presenting berets to 48 policemen who had completed the basic commando
training at the Ulu Kinta General Operations Force Northern Brigade camp in this
northern city.
On Saturday, local Malay daily Utusan Malaysia carried a report on its front
page that the weblog used pictures and drawings purportedly belonging to an
open-minded Malay woman but it believed that the woman's photograph and name had
been used by a third party.
Later that day, police picked up the woman and recorded her statement. She
has since been released on police bail.
